Headshots in unexpected places

I don't always know what the needs will be when I walk into a shoot. Usually there's a plan, sometimes it's more of an idea, and sometimes there's an immediate need that comes up in the moment that we tackle together.

At GiGi's Playhouse New York City, the need the day I visited was headshots for their upcoming gala. They wanted black and white, and we knew a darker wall would do them more justice than white. So we stepped outside and went hunting.

Up the block to the right. Nothing. Down to the left. Nothing.

Then, walking back, there it was. A little alcove right by the front door with the most perfect gray wall. It was like it was made for headshots. We had missed it. We walked right by it.

So often in photography, and in life, the perfect thing is waiting when we look in every direction, even behind us.

Some moments needed a friend standing close to shade the sun. Some moments the light was just right. Every participant left with a headshot they can be proud of.

Inside the doors of GiGi’s Playhouse NYC I always find amazing energy and beautiful people. Today, and not for the first time, I found beautiful texture, light, framing and lines right outside their door. New York feels like a treasure hunt that way. There's magic on every street corner, and finding it fills me up every time.

I can't wait to visit again and see what we can create with Gigi’s Playhouse NYC.

Till next time!
